Belfair, Washington Belfair is an unincorporated community located in Mason County, Washington. Belfair lies at the innermost waters of Hood Canal tucked away on an inside passage of the Canal, a branch of Puget Sound. The population of the surrounding area swells in the summertime as tourists and nature lovers flock to the Canal and state parks. The population within the Urban Growth Area (UGA) is an estimated 900. Belfair serves as the commercial center for North Mason County. The area abounds with Boating, fishing, hiking, biking, camping and shopping opportunities. Linking visitors to the southeast Olympics and Hood Canal from points further north and east. Located on State Routes 3 approximately 10 miles south of Bremerton and 25 miles north of Shelton, Belfair is a popular destination for many boaters, scuba divers, backpackers, ATV riders and campers. Belfair is located on an isthmus connecting the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsula. It receives an average rainfall of 60" yearly and has a growing season of 212 days. Belfair was originally called Clifton, as were several other WA towns. To avoid confusion, it was renamed in 1925 by Mrs. Murray, the postmaster, who submitted the name Belfair from a book that she was then reading. Every year more than 150,000 visitors stroll the 135 acres of the Theler Wetlands, where four miles of barrier-free scenic trails are open daily, dawn to dusk.. Viewing platforms, 1768 feet of floating boardwalk and many interpretive kiosks provide extended opportunities to fully experience the variety of wildlife throughout the wetlands. Nearby State Parks and Forests Belfair is near to Twanoh State Park and Belfair State Park, both of which offer some of the best beaches and swimming on Hood Canal. Through July and August the surface water of Hood Canal warms considerably, and many first-time visitors are surprised to find themselves enjoying a cool, refreshing salt water dip. Covering much of the Tahuya Peninsula, the 23,100 acre Tahuya State Forest provides more than 160 miles of marked and maintained ORV trails, plus plenty of primitive camping and fresh water lakes, making it a nationally recognized Off Road Vehicle recreation destination.
